McCain: Four More Years of Children as Widgets

As if teachers don't have enough to worry about, the edweek news site — which seems to be going out of its way to be Republican-friendly — just posted an article with this little gem about Rep. Howard P. "Buck" McKeon of California:

"And like McCain (and most Republicans) McKeon spoke enthusiastically about the need for performance pay for teachers."

McKeon is on the House Education and Labor Committee; he is also a very scary individual (I know, because I interviewed him several times during my tenure at the JJ). If McCain gets in, it is likely he would give McKeon even more power; hence we will be back to trying to convince the public that holding us "accountable" via paycheck for students' low performance fails to recognize all the other factors of how and why children don't do well in school. Things like poverty, violence, and hunger; stressed out, too-busy, undereducated or indifferent parents; the Internet, the television, iPods and all the other media that serves as a distraction, and of course the rampant lack of respect and profound lack of support for education in our culture.

Oh, I'm sorry — the Republican majority just sent me a notice that those things don't really exist.

As Emily Litella would say...Never mind.
